Today I would like to introduce you to a place that I truly heart and should be one the top tours during your vacations in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum. Punta Laguna Spider Monkey is a Natural Reserve right at 40 minutes from the Riviera Maya and 20 minutes north of Coba Ruins.
The reserve is owned and managed by the Mayan people of the Community Punta Laguna Spider Monkey reserve. It is one of the eleven Mayan communities surrounding the protected area of Otoch Ma´ax Yetel Kooh, which in Mayan language means "Home of the Monkey and Puma."
In 2003 a group of inhabitants from this community created the Najil Tucha Cooperative to provide tourism services to both national and international visitors. They aimed at raising awareness about the importance of carrying out conservation endeavors in the reserve through their participation in these activities. Important universities have elaborated ecological and social studies, in order to better understand the communities, flora and fauna and set out conservation strategies.
For example, some of them included the Spider Monkey behavior and their role in the regeneration of the jungle's vegetation. Interestingly, they found out these animals play an important role in spreading around trees' seeds and help out in planting them around. These monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) are the most represented and charismatic mammal of the area and it is possible to observe them during walks around the lagoon. It is estimated that there exist approximately between 400 and 800 individuals as well as Howler Monkeys (Aloutta pigra), although in lower numbers. Spider Monkeys are easily spotted around and are not perturbed by human presence.
Punta Laguna Spider Monkey reserve is definitely an amazing place to visit during your holidays in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum. You will learn many things about the Mayan culture, their current status and way of living. Especially, your kids will be fascinated by all the tropical animals they will be able to see.
