Certainly Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya are famous and great vacation spots. But, if you go a little bit more south, you will discover a new and less developed piece of coast called the Costa Maya. Here, you will find many incredible beaches and today we want to tell you a little bit about one of our favorites: Mahahual.
Mahahual features white soft sandy beaches, shallow turquoise Caribbean waters, traditional palapas as well as more modern buildings, creating a magical atmosphere for your vacations in Mexico. Curiously enough, just like Playa del Carmen, this village started being populated by Italians some years ago, attracted to its incredible charm and privileged location on the Mexican Caribbean coast. Mahahual has also found fame due to its important cruise ship port, which makes it an important stop within Caribbean routes. And there exist one more thing we love about it: starry nights! Since light pollution is very low, it is a great location to observe all the stars we cannot normally see from a busy city.
Like most villages in the area, it is right in front of the second largest coral reef in the world. But it does feature something unique: Banco Chinchorro. This is an atoll reef just lying off the coast of Mahahual, famous for its in-land fauna (iguanas, crocodiles and a few other amazing creatures) as well as kayaking, snorkeling and diving activities. It is common to see Lion Fish, lobsters and some other amazing Caribbean Sea inhabitants. If you do visit Mahahual during your Cancun and Playa del Carmen vacations, you must adventure on it. What is more, if you stay in Mahahual itself for your holidays, you will probably have to come more than once to truly embrace this spectacular place.

Mahahual offers some great sleeping arrangements, which you can check on our website.
How to get there
Like most beach destinations in the area, Mahahual is right onto the 307 Hwy. Therefore, if you are staying in Cancun or Playa del Carmen during your vacations, we recommend you rent a car (3 hours approx.). This will give you the opportunity to better explore the area. However, it is also easily reachable from Cancun International Airport by bus as well as from any other place in the State of Quintana Roo with companies such as ADO (from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya in general) and Autobuses Caribe (from Chetumal).
