Punta Herrero is located almost three hours south of Mahahual in the Costa Maya and offers the possibility to visit a place with no modern comforts during your vacations in Mexico. It is in the Costa Maya, basically south of the more famous vacation spots of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya. It is a small fishing village on a tiny sand strip between a lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. It is one of the central entrances to the beautiful Sian Ka’an Biosphere at the extreme end of Bahia del Espiritu Santo.
Punta Herrero offers no infrastructure, no hotels, one restaurant that serves the famous lobster and fresh fish, one tiny convenience store and that’s it. It is truly a remote location, perfect to disconnect from technology, crowds, traffic and stress. People who visit it feel extremely lucky. Remarkably, the friendly fishermen have created a cooperative that offers tours around this impressive place with activities such as flyfishing, snorkeling, bird watching and kayaking around the amazing lagoon (we recommend you reserve a tour guide at least one day in advance, since they may go out fishing).

Needless to say, all you can do in Punta Herrero is enjoy the flora and fauna, relax, take advantage of this secluded place and embrace its remoteness. Mangroves are famous here, since they are a natural barrier against hurricanes which hit particularly hard in this area. Remarkably, the landscape may change a little bit from one year to another, if a particularly intense hurricane hits the State of Quintana Roo. For adventurous people who are looking for something different from holidays in Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, we recommend you camp for a couple of days, in order to really soak in the experience of being in such an isolated place. If you need time for yourself, think about your life and reconnect with your soul, then this is the perfect place. Only around 40 people live in Punta Herrero, leaving you plenty of space to think things over.

How to get here
If you are on vacation in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, the Riviera Maya, it is a long trip and we recommend you make sleeping arrangements in Mahahual. Rent a car (during the rainy season a high car may be more convenient) and hit south on Hwy 307. Once you get to Mahahual, you need to follow signs to Uvero (northeast of Mahahual), pass this small village and drive until you hit Punta Herrero (approximately 40km).
