Mexico is Cancun and something else: Xcalak

Cancun and Playa del Carmen are amazing places for vacations. But, if you are looking for some incredible secluded holidays in Mexico, then Xcalak is what you are looking for. With amazing scuba diving activities, lush vegetation, secretive beaches and tranquility all around, this spectacular village looks like paradise on earth. If you want to experience something different from your usual beach vacations, then let us walk you through some place that is one of a kind.

Canal de Zaragoza, Xcalak
Xcalak counts approximately 375 inhabitants and is located some 250 miles south of Cancun. It is right next to Belize and in front of the second largest coral reef in the world, making it a unique diving destination during your holidays in Mexico. It is quite rural and far from what we could call “progress”, but this is exactly what makes Xcalak special. You can relax, forget about your worries, get in touch with your inner self, yet you can take advantage of all the water activities this little village offers. Here, you will be able to see a different way of living, where humanity and nature coexist in peace and tranquility.
Diving and snorkeling are obviously Xcalak’s forte, due to its privileged location on the Mexican Caribbean coast. Deepening in these warm and turquoise waters is just a dream come true, especially if it is snowing at home. The most popular dive center is XTC Dive Center, which always receives very good reviews.

Diving is the main activity in Xcalak
Xcalak is pure Mexico to its full extent. It offers friendly restaurants as well as a few great lodging options for travelers who are curious about vacationing in a different way and explore rural and beautiful Mexico.
Being quite a remote location, you will find amazingly fresh food and real Mexican flavours. However, do not expect particularly stylish restaurants. Yet, we are sure you will get addicted to fresh fish ceviche and tacos. Some interesting options are Leaky Palapa RestaurantsXcalak Caribe, and Mermaid Cafe.
Xcalak features some small and friendly hotels, nothing like the luxurious accomodations of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Nevertheless, you will be able to get a good rest and enjoy this amazing village. Some options are Playa Sonrisa, Costa de Coco, and Hotel Tierra Maya.
How to get there
If you are on vacation in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, we recommend you rent a car and hit the 307 Hwy from the Riviera Maya, in order to be free and explore the area once you get to Xcalak. Otherwise, you can get to Chetumal and then take a bus there.
